Author: Terry Pratchett
Name: Lords and Ladies
Rating:
Pretty mediocre for a Discworld book.
Author: Robert A. Heinlein
Name: Stranger in a Strange Land
Rating:
I was finally able to read science fiction's most famous author's most famous book, and the book certainly lived up to the expectations I had.
Author: Harry Harrison
Name: A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born
Rating: Reread
Wasn't as good as I remembered it being..
Author: Michael Crichton
Name: Suora lento (Airframe)
Rating:
Crichton's latest book is a nice insider's view at the airline business. Though USA-centric (European Airbus is Satan reborn, and the American companies, namely Boeing and Douglas, are holier-than-thou.), it's still an intriguing book.
Author: Michael M. Hart
Name: Maailmanhistorian 100 Vaikutusvaltaisinta ihmistä (The 100)
Rating:
Lots of interesting information in an easily digestible format.
Author: Pasi Nieminen
Name: Kertausharjoitus - Leikkiä vai totista totta
Rating:
Boring book with too much space devoted to describing in minute detail stupid military actions, like what are the various ways for men to get into and out of an APC. I get enough of that in the army already, I don't want to read about it in the evenings too.
Author: Harry Turtledove
Name: Worldwar - Striking the Balance
Rating:
An excellent end to an excellent series. The Worldwar series is to alternate history what Tolkien is to fantasy, it defines new standards of excellence for the genre. I have a feeling that like Tolkien's works, the Worldwar series will still be the number one 20 years from now.
Author: Dan Simmons
Name: Endymion
Rating:
After the somewhat disappointing Fall of Hyperion, Simmons manages to get the series back on the right track with Endymion, which is an excellent book, right up there with Hyperion. I can't wait for the next book in the series to be published.
Author: Günter Grass
Name: Peltirumpu (Die Blechtrommel)
Rating:
Strange book, and I don't quite know what to say about it. Mainly I'm left wondering why this book is referred to as one of the best since WWII, since I didn't notice anything too spectacular about the plot, the characters, or the language.
Author: John Irving
Name: Tuulesta Temmattu Tyttöystävä (Trying to Save Piggy Sneed)
Rating:
Now that I've read all of Irving's books except his first one, which hasn't been translated anyway and supposedly isn't as good as his later ones, I have to say he is one of my favorite authors. This book gives some nice background information about him and somewhat explains his obsession about wrestling and Vienna.
Author: Desmond Morris
Name: Alaston Apina (The Naked Ape)
Rating:
The book is quite interesting quite often, but even more often it is boring. The author jumps to conclusions without any real evidence and tries to present them as facts at some points in the book. And if the book took over 3 months for me to read despite having only 240 pages, it certainly wasn't one of those books you just can't put down. Quite the opposite actually.
Author: John Irving
Name: Vesimies (The Water-Method Man)
Rating:
The fastest 475 pages I've ever read. Not as good as his later novels, but still worth reading.
Author: Colin Greenland
Name: The Plenty Principle
Rating:
I had high hopes for this book after reading a lot of praise for it. So the way the book turned out to be was a big disappointment for me. The first couple of stories are lame Stephen King wannabes, only lacking everything that makes King's stories good. It doesn't get any better after that. In fact, I was left wondering why this book is referred to as science fiction. I don't classify stories about ghouls wandering in abandoned train stations, or stories about werewolves in USA in the sixties as science fiction. It's probably because the last story, the Tabitha Jute one, resembles science fiction somewhat.
Author: Dan Simmons
Name: Hyperion
Rating:
Sometimes a book comes along that defies all scales. This is one of those books. On a scale of 1-5, I have no choice but to give it 6 to separate it from the other books which I have given 5 stars. Books like this are the reason I read science fiction.
