First of all, I have 16 more Greene books on my shelf waiting to be read, so I have to use some judgement in rating these; if I blow all my stars on one and then encounter a measurably better one I'm trapped. So, this is a very strong 3 stars. The characterization is good, and you really get a sense that it was a very different world back then.
