The trouble with inserting lots of cultural references in a book is that no matter how hip and cool it may seem at the time, 20 years later, reading a book like that is a uniquely weird experience. Every other page has a reference to a person or TV show or snack or whatever that totally yanks you back to reality, "oh yeah, this is just a book written 20 years ago". Otherwise it has some gaping holes in the plot ("lets go hide out in my grandfather's cottage nearby that he left to me, I'm sure the secret government agency won't think of that!"), but manages to stay pretty readable throughout.
